Level 2 - Certificate in Accounting
An entry-level course for future accountancy professionals.
You’ll learn the basic principles of accountancy, such as basic costing, introduction to Bookkeeping, and principles of Bookkeeping Controls.
- Duration: 12 Months
- Potential Roles: accounts payable clerk, accounts officer, payroll administrator, finance assistant
- Potential Salary: Up to £23,000
Level 3 - Diploma in Accounting
Builds on the knowledge gained at Level 2.
You’ll learn how to prepare final accounts for Sole Traders and Partnership as well as dealing with VAT returns for businesses.
- Duration: 12 Months
- Potential Roles: finance officer, assistant accountant, advanced bookkeeper
- Potential Salary: Up to £25,000
Level 4 - Diploma in Professional Accounting
This is the final level of AAT Accounting qualification.
You’ll learn about budgeting, management accounting, preparing financial statements, accounting systems, and tax.
- Duration: 12 Months
- Potential Roles: forensic accountant, tax manager, accountancy consultant, finance analyst
- Potential Salary: Up to £42,500
AAT Bookkeeping Course - Fast Track
You don’t need any previous accounting experience or qualifications to start studying an AAT Bookkeeping qualification.
After you pass this level you’ll gain the skills to become a bookkeeper.

AAT provides a range of accounting and bookkeeping qualifications. If you prefer to pursue your career as an accountant you may choose to go for the AAT Accounting qualification. However, if you prefer to build your career as a bookkeeper, you may choose to go for the AAT Bookkeeping qualification.

AAT Accounting Qualification (AQ22)
AAT qualification consists of four progressive qualification levels (1, 2, 3 & 4) which will cover the key areas of Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation, Audit, and Report Writing. You may start from Level 2 if you have basic math and numeracy skills.
In order to complete the full AAT Accounting qualification and gain full membership of the AAT, you will need to complete Level 3 and Level 4. Level 2 is recommended as an entry-level if you have no experience or knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping.
The AAT qualification for accounting is broken down into three levels:
- AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (4 Papers/Subjects)
- AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting (4 Papers/Subjects)
- Finally AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting (5 Papers/Subjects)
The AAT Accounting Qualification gives you practical, internationally recognised finance and accountancy skills that opens doors for you in many industries across the world.
Moreover, AAT offers a range of benefits for student members (including study support, career advice to help find the perfect job, and exclusive discounts), as well as a route to progress into chartered accountancy.
Also, if you choose to further your studies with any of the leading chartered accountancy professional bodies like ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, etc. your AAT qualification could make you eligible for generous exemptions.
AAT Bookkeeping Qualification (AQ22)
If you want to build a career as a Bookkeeper, you may join AAT Bookkeeping courses (Fast Track). On completion, you can gain AATQB (AAT Qualified Bookkeeper) Status. It will give you a professional edge with greater credibility and greater employment prospects.
Course Summary
The AAT Bookkeeping course is broken down into two Levels:
- Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping – includes Introduction to Bookkeeping and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls.
- Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping – includes Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements and Tax Processes for Business.
